JOHANNESBURG – For the first time in nearly four decades, a South African wears the Miss Universe crown.

In the early hours of Monday morning, Miss South Africa, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters walked away with the crown.

After being carjacked earlier this year, 22-year-old Nel-Peters wants to teach women how to protect themselves both physically and emotionally.
