But five years after a wedding fit for royalty in Italy, Katie Holmes filed divorce papers to legally end her marriage in June 2012 — and asked for sole custody of their daughter, Suri. Two very different statements from each party seem to hint that the decision to end their marriage was not mutual. “Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest,” read the statement from Holmes’ lawyer. Tom Cruise’s rep subsequently told the press, “Kate has filed for divorce, and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children.”

Neither was willing to make compromises in their demanding careers so that they could see each other more.
23/37 SLIDES | They were Hollywood’s golden couple for the first half of the 2000s.
